It's notable, for example, that some of the states with the lowest life expectancies are also the ones with the most uninsured residents and, yet, have turned down Medicaid expansion. But public health and political leaders also have important roles to play, particularly for marginalized, disadvantaged citizens. We can all vow to exercise more, choose a healthier diet, and work harder to be healthy as best we can. This downward trend could be reversed if we make progress in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic and opioid epidemic.Ĭan we prevent premature death and eliminate disparities in life expectancy? These are challenging, worthy goals that require individual and collective action. Still, it's striking - and disappointing - that after decades of increasing life expectancy, and at a time when researchers are rethinking aging and the limits of the lifespan, we are now seeing life expectancy fall. Other measures, such as infant mortality, maternal mortality, vaccination and cancer screening rates, and years of healthy life lived are not directly captured by reports on life expectancy. Life expectancy is only one measure of health. Lower life expectancy in southern states raises the possibility that politics, vaccination policies, pollution, climate, or other variable factors may contribute to discrepancies in life expectancy. Notably, life expectancy varies widely by state. Additionally, groups with lower life expectancy tend to have higher-risk jobs that can't be performed virtually, live in more crowded settings, and have less access to vaccination, which increases the risk of becoming sick with or dying of COVID-19. For example, those with the shortest life expectancies in the US tend to have the most poverty, face the most food insecurity, and have less or no access to healthcare, all factors that contribute to lower life expectancy. The social determinants of health likely explain a lot of these disparities.
This is a cat that doesn't even like treats. I offer her a bit of canned food almost daily (Fancy Feast) but she only takes a few licks and nibbles of it at most. She eats mostly dry food.I feed her Nature's Recipe brand. She is, unfortunately, a very limited eater. I'd have to syringe her food unless she perks up enough to be able to eat on her own. Plus I'm short on money so I can't really afford overnight stays there and this isn't my regular vet either, I had the option of leaving her at the vet to be put in an incubator with IV treatment but it was not a guarantee it would save her and I hated to leave without her so I opted for the subQ treatment. I've just now turned the heater off for a bit to give it a break, and the vaporizer seems to be doing a decent job at keeping moisture in the air as well as some warmth. The door is mostly closed.I do leave it cracked a little bit and I've been checking in every half hour or so. It's a safe vaporizer, meant to be child friendly.not one that she can get burned on or anything. I have a vaporizer running in there as well to help offset some of the dry air. So my only option is to keep her in a room that is as warm as possible (without being too hot), and let her lay in there where/how she likes. I wish I could hold her on my lap with a blanket as I watch tv or something but she doesn't want to be held. I've tried covering her with my shawl, something very lightweight and warm but she didn't like that. Seems she wants the cold hard surface of the bathroom floor to lay on. She needs to be warm but she won't stay in a cat bed.she doesn't even seem to want to lay on the rugs I have scattered on the floor. With regards to the heated bathroom, I've been checking regularly to make sure it's not feeling overly hot in there.keeping a close eye on things and the whole setup. However, she has received this antibiotic twice before in the past and did not have any negative response to it and it seemed to help her, so hopefully it will be the same for this time as well. I didn't even know it was Convenia that he gave her until after I looked at the invoice. The antibiotic was Convenia, which I know is controversial. She does get up to move from place to place as every time I check on her she is laying in a different spot, but she looks so awful. I hate seeing how she is every time I open the bathroom door to check on her. This all happened rather suddenly, her going downhill like this. I know she's going to be needing food/nutrition soon, but right now water is my bigger concern. She did pee on the floor next to the litter pan so I guess that means the fluids are getting processed through her, plus I give her credit for almost making it into the litter pan considering how weak she is. She's being kept in the bathroom which I've made as warm as possible for her and with a warm steam vaporizer as well. She's actually looking worse now than she did this morning when I took her in. It's no exaggeration when I say she looks as though she's dying.a cat taking her last breaths. I'm hoping the SubQ will hold her over for a bit until she's feeling a bit better (hopefully that WILL happen) I've never seen a cat look so sick. The vet visit was plenty stressful enough for her. He gave me a couple of syringes in 2 different sizes so I can try syringing her water.but right now she's in such a bad state and I don't want to stress her out further by trying to force water down her throat. He said it will only last her maybe a week or so (if it DOES help, right now it's wait and see) and then I'd need to see my regular vet for continued treatment. Yeah, the steroid, antibiotic, and sub is a temporary fix. She's quite now and seems to be resting/sleeping and the room she is in has gotten very warm. She was meowing in distress about an hour ago. I currently have her in the bathroom near the heat vent where she is laid on a rug and with a portable heater close by. I'm just wondering about the subcutaneous fluid.how effective is it at helping a dehydrated cat? Anybody have any experience with this treatment? The dehydration and her low body temp scare me. This is very upsetting for me but I need to do what I can to give her a fighting chance. He was blunt in telling me she is seriously ill and her prognosis is not so great. The vet gave her a treatment of subcutaneous fluid, an antibiotic and a steroid. She is also dehydrated which didn't surprise me. She has an infection in her chest and here's the scary thing: I was thinking she probably had a fever but her temp is the opposite at only 92F, 10 degrees below normal. She has feline herpes and chronic congestion has been an ongoing issue for her since the day I first got her. She seemed to go downhill pretty fast since Friday evening and didn't eat or drink anything yesterday. Had to take my cat to the emergency vet today because she is so sick. Unfortunately, music purchased from iTunes was still DRM-locked, limiting the amount of options professionals had to convert and transfer their library to other platforms. Songs could be purchased from the iTunes Store and then transferred though a series of processes to DJ equipment for mixing. But there was iTunes on the Mac, which was immensely popular with DJs as it was one of the only legal platforms to digitally download and collect music. Back then, all the hype surrounded the iPod, which was fantastic for playing music but incapable of creating it. No matter what software he tried, Christoph was often puzzled as most professional software featured an overwhelming set of controls and required an insanely high level of manual skill, which made performing all the more difficult.Īs such, the duo wanted to make something new software that they and similar people could both use.Įnter 2006, a time when the iPhone and iPad were nothing more than mere prototypes in Jony Ive’s top secret design laboratory. He could manage, as digital software proved to have a superior functionality compared to his old analog favorites, but the situation wasn’t even close to ideal.Ĭhristoph, on the other hand, had an extraordinary admiration for DJing, but didn’t have the experience or expertise of his buddy Karim. But with every gig he played, Karim found each solution clunky and downright confounding. With ten years of experience under his belt, Karim had his fair share of knowledge about the industry and had used some of the most popular DJ software available. While they both enjoyed the art of scratching, in between attending classes and studying for exams at college, the two had vastly different skill levels. At the time, DJ software was extremely expensive and complex, but the pair were determined to create meaningful change in an industry they were both tremendously passionate about. That’s the question that inspired co-founders Karim and Christoph to make Algoriddim’s djay, the award-winning music production software. “How can we create high quality, easy-to-use software for both professional and novice DJs?” You can use presets, access a library of plug-ins, and edit metadata. Sharpening and noise removal work well but fall short when compared to Lightroom. Like Lightroom, you also can change the color balance. It takes your image through sorting and editing all the way to printing.Įxposure, white balance, saturation, and contrast are all present, giving you control over your images. For one, they allow the same workflow, from import to export. There are many similarities between AfterShot Pro 3 and other editing software. The only thing I had a problem with was figuring out how to paint in local adjustments. There aren’t so many they become confusing. Unlike Lightroom or ON1 Photo RAW, which uses modules, AfterShot Pro 3 uses tabs. With that said, I like the simple window. Camera Profiles aren’t as useful as the exposure slider or are so hidden that they must be pointed out. This isn’t the most important area to draw your attention to. It is supposed to bring your eye to the “Get More” Modular Camera Profiles. Next is that red star icon in the middle of the far right of the interface window. They don’t need to be so over the top, though. These colors are labels and can be added to your images to separate them in your culling or selection process. The next thing I find distracting is the terrible colors at the top of the window interface. But it’s very basic, and it isn’t fun to use. I feel like Aftershot Pro 3 was a little lazy here. Adobe Lightroom created its own icons, which are not over the top. They are horrible and distracting.Īt the very least, they need to be muted or, even better, adapted to fit into the same theme as the program. Number one is they left the Windows-style folder icons and colors in the File System on the left. There are many things I find that don’t fit well. But I find the interface not as attractive or easy on the eyes as its competitors. You might like the interface if this is your first entrance into photo editing software. Why not concentrate on an engine that focuses on something different or better? I understand the main benefit of AfterShot is that it is much faster than Lightroom. With AfterShot Pro 3, it’s a little too similar. The problem with comparing yourself to Lightroom is that it forces the new editing software to copy and act in the same vein. They also make a comparison to Lightroom 6 to compare perpetual licenses. They perhaps didn’t do this because their product doesn’t hold up so well to the fuller version. If AfterShot Pro 3 were to compare itself to any program, it should be Lightroom Classic. So Aftersthot is comparing itself to a basic and inferior product. Lightroom CC is meant to give mobile and tablet-based photo editors access to desktop editing. Based on their mobile app, I see AfterShot Pro 3 as a basic beginner’s version of Lightroom. But its information is a bit outdated.Īlso, Lightroom CC is not necessarily the direct competitor of AfterShot Pro 3. You can see quickly what AfterShot gives you and where Lightroom fails. On AfterShot’s website, there is a comparison of AfterShot Pro 3 against Lightroom CC (2015) and Lightroom 6. (Note that the 2022 version of Lightroom Classic now has some basic masking tool features for subject, sky, and background.) AfterShot Pro 3 advantages Comparing AfterShot Pro 3 to Lightroom And may use lightweight software like AfterShot Pro 3 and Lightroom for culling and local adjustments. You might use the heavyweights for layers, masks, focus stacking, and other complex edits. In the end, you may use both types of programs. The first three have introduced more advanced features you find in Photoshop, like masks and layers. Because of this, the main competitors of AfterShot Pro 3 are Adobe Lightroom, ON1 Photo RAW, Darktable, and RawTherapee. I prefer a faster workflow compared to more complex adjustments, too. The lightweights go for speed rather than advanced editing. AfterShot Pro 3, Adobe Lightroom, and ON1 Photo RAW fall into this category. They process images “faster than a butterfly” but lack more complex post-processing tools. (Read our Capture One vs Lightroom post.) Photoshop and Capture One are great examples of these. Some heavy hitters have all the advanced tools but a slower workflow. And looking at the many different ones out there, it’s easy to see how they both fall into one of two groups. AfterShot Pro 3 and Lightroom are image-editing software. |
